CANADA’S APPROACH IN PROCESS OF REFORMATION OF NAFTA

Mustafa AY – TDO – 28.08.2018 On Monday, Canadian Ministry for Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman, Chrystia Freeland, announced that Ottawa administration is going to proceed with ongoing negotiation for processing NAFTA through reformation since Canada witnessed both Mexico and USA displayed eagerness to compromise. Referring to Trump administration, Chrystia specified that Ottawa will merely sign the treaty if it serves for Canada’s interests.

Ottawa’s Spokesman Adam Austen uttered “Ending of ongoing tension between USA and Mexico is extremely vital and essential for the process of negotiations for reformation of NAFTA… We stress the fact that Canada will not sign any piece of agreement if it will not serve for interest of Canada and its people”. With these words, Canadian spokesman apparently made a reference to Trump’s presidential campaign propaganda that was “only USA”.

Ongoing issue of border Wall between USA and Mexico led Canada to interrupt the negotiations that was conducted with the aim of processing NAFTA through modernization/reformation. On Monday, both US and Mexican officials made official remarks that they reached a compromise to remedy the tension for eliminating Canada’s concerns. In face of Ottawa’s reluctance to continue the trilateral talks, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto constantly called upon Canada for taking part in NAFTA negotiations.
