The Brazilian Embassy is glad to inform that on the 10th February, the Brazilian frigate “Liberal” will be in Mersin to present thanks to naval authorities of Turkey, which provides support to Brazilian ships.
Frigate “Liberal” is the current flagship of the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force (MTF), deployed since October 2006, which supports the Lebanese Navy in monitoring its territorial waters, securing the Lebanese coastline and preventing the unauthorized entry of arms or related materials by sea into Lebanon. Another important aspect of MTF’s mission is its contribution to the training of the Lebanese Navy, so that it may execute, in the future, those maritime security tasks currently carried out by MTF.
This is the first Naval Task Force ever to take part in a United Nations peacekeeping mission. A total of 15 countries have contributed to the MTF: Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. It is currently commanded by Rear Admiral Claudio Henrique Mello de Almeida, from the Brazilian Navy.
