BERLIN’S DECISION ON KURDS IN THE AFTERMATH OF KIRKUK’S RECAPTURE BY IRAQI FORCES

By Mustafa AY – TDO – 19.10.2017 Berlin suspended training mission of Peshmerge -Kurdish fighters- following heavy defeat in Kirkuk by Iraqi forces. As seen in the Youtube footages, German military officials yielded every sort of military support ranging from weapons to training to Kurdish Peshmerges. However, with Kirkuk’s recapture by Iraqi forces, Berlin detected how useless all the facilities to Peshmerge were useless.

Since the beginning of Mosul operation, German government embarked on sending its most sophisticated weapons such as 32,000 numbers of Heckler&Koch ‘G36’ assault rifles, G3’s and other types of weapons valued at 100 million Dollars. Besides this, in 2014, Germany commissioned its 130 military officials including in Special Forces affiliates at KRG’s disposal. Those German military officials had been working in Erbil at the pretext of training, but some were allegedly appeared in frontlines against DEAS with Peshmerge, and then in frontlines against Iraqi forces in Kirkuk. But, with the latest progress in Kirkuk and fluctuations in oil production of KRG, Berlin saw the gradual losses of KRG. Therefore, Merkel seemingly withdrew its full support from KRG, but we can’t know whether it is fully or not.
