Mustafa AY – TDO – 26.10.2018 Brussel has recently announced that they chose US F-35 to supersede its aging F-16s in its Air Force’s inventory. For this, Belgium government specified that they will execute negotiations with US Lockheed Martin for the procurement of 34 F-35A in exchange of $4,6 billion.
Belgium government’s choice on behalf of F-35 has recently triggered the sequence of criticism by opposition parties in parliament. Opposition representatives drew people’s attention to inflated cost and recent technical malfunction occurred in F-35s. In addition to this, Belgium opposition specified that the government ought to make its choice on behalf of EU-made aircrafts such as Eurofighter.
In response to increasing critical voices against F-35 in parliament, on Thursday, Deputy PM Alexander De Croo stated “if you want to have a security-oriented collaboration, you have to make notable contribution to it”.
