Mustafa AY – TDO – 06.11.2018 Bahraini political dissident Sheikh Ali Salman has just been condemned to life sentence on the grounds that he allegedly performed espionage activities on behalf of Qatar. Previously, Sheikh Salman applied to Bahrain’ Court of Appeal in the hope of getting acquittal of all charges. On the contrary, the Court of Appeal upheld the ruling of life sentence by refusing Salman’s application.
At the last months, Bahrain’s High Court of First Tier released a final ruling to acquit Sheikh Salman of the charge of fuelling tension between Bahrain and Qatar. As a rationale to its decision, the court underlined that the charges against Sheikh Salman were unfounded. But, Bahrain’ Court of Appeal’s current ruling of life sentence obstructed all legal ways that Sheikh Salman would resort to reverse this decision. Because the ruling was directly upheld by Court of Appeal, which is the highest court revising the court decisions once more.
Following this judgement, International Amnesty condemned Bahrain by asserting “Bahrain put pressure on the country’s prominent political dissidents… So, Bahrain apparently violates the freedom of expression.”
