A HISTORICAL LOOK AT ENERGY GEOPOLITICS – PART 2 (THE 1850-1914 PERIOD)





In the 1850s petroleum was used solely for lighting and medicinal purposes. Previously whale oil and coal gas had been used for lighting. the use of petroleum in lighting became possible with George Bisselin’s discovery of kerosene through the distillation of gas from rock oil. The interest of investors in the kerosene sector was greatly influenced by a report prepared by Prof. Dr. Silliman of Yale University which explained the future of the kerosene sector and its potential in the USA.
